The ‘auld grey town’ of Kendal enjoys a fantastic position as the traditional gateway to the Lake District, with excellent road and rail transport links via Oxenholme train station and the M6, making it an ideal place to call home. With an abundance of charm to be found within the town centre’s cobbled yards, a wealth of independent shops and some beautiful walks, from an amble along the River Kent to a hike up Scout Scar, there is plenty to do in Kendal. All year round, the town is host to an array of events including the well-known Kendal Mountain Festival and Torchlight Festival and it’s the birthplace of Kendal Calling, which has since moved to Lowther Deer Park.
Our branch sits in the Market Place, which is also host to weekly markets and farmer’s market which visits twice a month showcasing a selection of local makers including Lovingly Artisan, Sweets Treats by Martin Frickel, Cross Apiary and The Flying Chocsman, to name a few. From the town centre, it’s only a short walk to Kendal Castle which was famously associated with Queen Katherine Parr, the sixth wife of King Henry VIII. The castle offers a rich history, having been built in the 13th century but believed to have been in a state of disrepair by the 16th century. From the castle you can also enjoy some impressive views over Kendal town and Lakeland Fells beyond.
With two excellent secondary schools, Kirkbie Kendal and Queen Katherine School, as well as a number of primary schools and nurseries, Kendal is also a great place to raise a family. Kendal College is often ranked highly for further education and provides a selection of great courses across 3 college campuses. For younger children you’ll find some great soft play areas, lots of parks and indoor groups for the winter months. A wealth of outdoor learning opportunities are available, and with a plethora of sports clubs, a climbing wall and dry ski slope, there is plenty to keep children engaged and entertained.
The Kendal housing market offers a vast array of properties, suitable for a range of buyers. Sat on the edge of the River Kent is Sand Aire House which is a fantastic development of flats, converted in the early 2000s, which offer great access to the town centre and low maintenance living. A number of apartment blocks in the town centre also cater to the over 60s to provide additional support, if required.
Many areas of Kendal showcase some older style terraced homes, whilst a number of new build sites have been introduced over recent years providing low-cost homes, bungalows and larger family homes. Surrounding Kendal are a number of popular villages as well as the bustling Lake District. South of Kendal you’ll find Milnthorpe, which is home to another of our branches, as well as popular villages like Arnside, Burton-in-Kendal, Endmoor and Natland. To the North of Kendal, en route to Windermere, you’ll find Staveley and Burneside, which are both very popular with families.
