    • Martin Oates

      Martin Oates - Partner

      Martin studied Law at University of East Anglia, and York College of Law, came to Poole and Son (as it was then) in 1989 and never managed to find his way out again.

      "Barrow is a lovely place to live and work and gets more than its fair share of bad press. I work from all of our offices in South Cumbria from Barrow through to Milnthorpe and Kendal and they are all very different."

      Martin became a Partner in 1998 and is Head of Department for Wills and Tax planning and Estates administration. Martin enjoys challenging tax planning problems and particularly likes helping clients to keep their money away from the taxman. He enjoys working with older clients who have particular issues and needs which over 20 years of experience helps Martin deal with in a caring but light hearted way.

      Martin’s hobbies included skiing and collecting/moving sports equipment round in his garage (eg mountain bike, windsurfing gear) to stop the dust getting too deep. He loves music, likes films, hates TV Soap Operas and reality TV shows. Also loves food and tries to keep fit but fitness is rarely the priority.

      Martin has two daughters; Kate is at barrow 6th form and Ellie was born in December 2014.

    • Derek Pearce

      Derek Pearce - Partner (Non Lawyer)

      Derek joined Poole Townsend in 1996 as an IFA after spending the previous 7 years giving financial advice across Cumbria for a major bank and life office. His areas of expertise lie in all matters financial with an emphasis on complex Estate and Inheritance tax planning and investments, “there’s not much I haven’t come across over the 25 years in the industry, and this allows me to provide help and advice in just about any circumstance”.

      Derek took over management of the Financial Services department in 2003, and has been involved in all the strategic planning within the firm for some time, becoming a Partner in 2010, one of the first non-lawyer Partners within a law firm in the UK. He is the firms COFA and jointly runs all the firms marketing activities along with Angela Cornthwaite.

      Derek’s qualifications include:

      Derek enjoys cooking for friends and family, holidays, reading, walking his dogs, Buster and Oscar and his new found love, spinning!

    • Lindsey Bayles

      Lindsey Bayles - Partner

      Lindsey has been a Solicitor and Partner with Poole Townsend solicitors, Estate Agents and Financial Services since 1992.

      Lindsey’s expertise lies in Civil Litigation in the Legal department. Her main area of work is in claimant personal injury claims including road traffic accidents, accidents at work and she has a particular interest in Asbestos-related disease claims. She is renowned in legal circles and with local families for her work with thousands of victims of asbestos exposure. She has a close involvement with the Cumbria Asbestos Related Disease Support Group (CARDS), based in Barrow in Furness. Other areas of expertise include professional negligence claims and contentious wills and probate claims.

      Lindsey started her legal career at Bruttons in Southampton before moving to the Lake District where she joined Gatey Heelis and then Poole Townsend. Lindsey is a member of APIL (Association of Personal Injury Lawyers) and has, in the past, supported the Coroner for South & East Cumbria as an Assistant Coroner.

      When time allows – and she is not running about after her two teenage children – many of Lindsey’s interests involve sport of all kinds including fell walking, running and orienteering, sailing, windsurfing, mountain biking, and tennis. To relax, she also enjoys cooking, reading, travel, gardening and involvement in local school and community projects.

    • Joanne Copeland

      Joanne Copeland - Partner

      Joanne’s areas of expertise are Claimant Personal Injury, Accidents at Work, Public Liability, Industrial Disease, Stress at Work, Assault and Criminal Injuries Compensation Claims together with Land and Ownership Dispute.

      Joanne qualified as a Solicitor in 1993 after training with Townsends before the firm merged with Poole & Son to become Poole Townsend. She became a Partner in 2001.

      Joanne’s qualifications include:

      • A member of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers
      • LLB (Hons) Law – University of Newcastle

      Joanne’s interests include spending time with her family, gardening, attending her local gym, cooking and socialising.

    • Susan Pyne

      Susan Pyne - Practising Consultant

      Susan specialises in a wide range of commercial matters including sales, purchases and leases for various types of property – industrial estates, offices, shops, hotels, public houses etc. She also acts in connection with sales and purchases of businesses, bank loans and business facilities.

      Susan qualified as a Solicitor in 1998 and became a Partner at Poole Townsend Solicitors, Estate Agents and Financial Services in 2000. Susan continues her commercial work as a Practising Consultant for Poole Townsend since semi-retiring in May 2017 to spend more time indulging in her favourite past-times which include fell walking and trekking, gardening, including growing her own fruit and vegetables, and a wide ranging taste in films, music and reading.

    • Trystan Roberts

      Trystan Roberts - Partner

      Trystan joined Poole Townsend in 1993 after gaining his law degree at Liverpool University and law society finals at Chester Law School. Completing his training in 1995 he stayed with the firm and became a partner 2003.

      Trystan’s practise is now exclusively criminal defence work and he has built a highly respected, experienced and approachable team. He deals with all aspects of criminal defence work with a caseload ranging from minor motoring and all magistrates court matters to Crown court cases of serious violence and sexual offences, murder, international money laundering and large scale drugs conspiracies.

      A law society accredited 24 hour court and police station duty solicitor Trystan represents clients in the magistrates court on a daily basis and if not there his wife can usually contact him at the police station!

      His firm belief is that all clients deserve a robust and proactive defence team to advance their rights regardless of the nature of the allegation.

      Since starting his career in Barrow he has managed to persuade Tracie to be his wife (he says probably the best bit of advocacy he has done!) and they have a wonderful son. He enjoys exercise, running, travel, the Arts and politics. Most of all he enjoys spending time with his family.

    • Angela Cornthwaite

      Angela Cornthwaite - Head of Property

      Angela has worked for Poole Townsend since 1998, starting in our Kendal office as a Sales Negotiator. She has worked in all our Estate Agency offices and has held the position of Property Department Administration manager for the last six years, before being appointed to the role of Head of Property in February 2010.

      Angela is responsible for the daily running of the Estate Agency offices and also oversees the letting department.

      Angela holds a BA in Business Studies and is a member of the National Association of Estate Agents, she is also a member of the Cumbria and North Lancashire Branch of the NAEA.

      When not at work Angela helps on the family farm and has three children to keep her occupied!

    • Joanne Grisdale

      Joanne Grisdale - Solicitor

      Joanne’s areas of work include Wills, Trusts, Power of Attorneys and Probate and Residential Conveyancing 

      Joanne joined the firm in 2007 and qualified as a Solicitor in September 2009 

      Joanne’s qualifications include: BA (Hons) Accounting & Law University of Manchester 2006 and she is also a member of STEP. 

      Outside work Joanne is interested in fashion, shopping, keeping fit and Barrow AFC

    • Elizabeth Redmond

      Elizabeth Redmond - Solicitor

      Originally from Manchester, Liz is a Solicitor with the Estate Planning Department. Areas of work include Will drafting, tax planning, administration of estates, drafting and registration of Powers of Attorney, Deputyship and other Court of Protection applications. She has specialist expertise in Will planning where parties are in their second or subsequent marriages.

      Liz Qualified as a Solicitor in 1981 after training in London. Since then she has worked in several local firms before moving to Poole Townsend in 2005.

      Liz’s qualifications include:

      • B.A. (Hons) English Language and Literature
      • Law Society Qualifying Examinations
      • Trusts and Estate Practitioner

      In her free time Liz enjoys fell walking, high altitude trekking, running, travel, reading, good food and wine.

    • Tina Bower

      Tina Bower - Assistant Conveyancer

      Tina is a Conveyancing Assistant with 21 years experience of working in conveyancing, firstly as a secretary and then as a fee earner.

      Tina enjoys cycling, gardening, cooking and baking treats for her 6 grandsons.

    • Jamie Williams

      Jamie Williams - Solicitor

      Jamie studied at Lancaster University where he graduated with a First Class Honours degree in Law and became a life long member of the “Venue of Legends,” Pendle College.

      Jamie joined Poole Townsend in the summer of 2010 having completed his Legal Practice Course at the College of Law in Manchester and undertaken work experience with a number of International Law Firms in both London and Manchester.

      When not cooped up in his office, Jamie’s hobbies include going to the gym and playing the occasional round of golf. He is also a former National University Darts Champion having been part of the title winning Lancaster University team in 2009.

      Jamie is a passionate Manchester United fan.

    • Elanor Findlay

      Elanor Findlay - Head of Family Department

      Elanor is an experienced family lawyer, and has worked in Cumbria since 2001, specialising in family law.

      Elanor has extensive experience of financial remedy cases following relationship breakdown, and resolution of childrens matters with a practical and realistic, yet sensitive approach to family matters. She is also experienced in the complex but important field of pension sharing orders, providing a holistic approach, in conjuction with our qualified pension specialist IFAs, from negotiation to obtaining the Court order, to implementation.

      Elanor is a member of Resolution and the Cumbria Family Justice Board. She is also a law society accredited Family Panel member.

      In November 2015, she obtained a LLM (Distinction) after returning to education in November 2014 whilst working full time, after a gap in studying for 14 years!

      In her spare time Elanor likes flashpacking around the far east, and exploring Europe, spending time with her partner, Steve, friends and her dog. She also loves being on boats, out on the water, not that she gets much time! 

    • Joanne Armer

      Joanne Armer - Solicitor

       Joanne studied Law at Nottingham Trent University and then completed her Legal Practice Course at Nottingham Law School.

      Her areas of work include Wills and Tax Planning, Estate Administration, Powers of Attorney and Residential Conveyancing.

      Joanne joined the firm in 2010 as a legal assistant. She qualified as a solicitor in 2015 and now works full time from our Milnthorpe office.

      Outside of work she enjoys spending time with her friends and watching stand-up comedy.

    • Amy  Watkin

      Amy Watkin - Solicitor

      Amy joined the firm in 2015 after qualifying as a Solicitor the previous year. Amy completed her Law Degree at Lancaster University before being accepted at Manchester College of Law to complete the Legal Practice Course.
      She is an Accredited Police Station Representative and has now set her sights on becoming a member of the Duty Solicitor’s Panel.
      When not at the Police Station, she enjoys travelling, catching up with friends, listening to music and watching comedians.

    • Daniel Hutton

      Daniel Hutton - Solicitor

      Daniel joined a firm in the Lancaster area in 2008, qualifying as a Solicitor in January 2011, having completed the Legal Practice Course at the University of Central Lancashire. He then joined Poole Townsend in March 2016.

      Having previously had a varied workload, in areas such as Employment, Personal Injury and Civil Litigation, Daniel now deals with all matters relating to Residential Conveyancing and Property Law in general. He regularly acts for clients in respect of sales and purchases of both freehold and leasehold properties, remortgages , together with transfers of equity.

      Daniel also has experience of acting for both residential and commercial landlords in connection with possession proceedings. Daniel is based in the firm’s Kendal office, and is keen to continue to strengthen the firm’s ties within the local community.

      When time allows outside of work, Daniel enjoys travel, music, and all manner of sports, from cricket to football, most particularly the fluctuating fortunes of Everton FC.

    • Nikki Bovis

      Nikki Bovis - Property Department Manager & Valuer

      Nikki is the property department manager and valuer of the busy Kendal office. Her duties include managing the smooth day to day running of the branch, ensuring that the highest levels of customer service are maintained. She is responsible for valuing properties with a view to marketing and guiding prospective sellers through the selling process.

      Nikki joined the company in 2002, having already had 10 years experience in estate agency in the south east of England.

      Nikki is a Member of the National Association of Estate Agents.

      Nikki’s interests include keeping fit, travel and walking.

    • Ruth Grimes

      Ruth Grimes - Lettings Manager

      Ruth is the Lettings Manager based in the Dalton in Furness office. She has many years of Customer Service experience working for Local Government, the Assurance Industry and the Health Service down South and then in Estate Agency and Lettings since moving to Cumbria over 15 years ago. She enjoys working and dealing with the general public as she has a naturally outgoing personality.

      Ruth Joined Poole Townsend Solicitors, Estate Agents and Financial Services in July 2000 on a temporary contract to cover a maternity leave and has never left! She has been at the Dalton office for the majority of this time, moving to Lettings (Originally in Ulverston) in September 2008.

      Ruth has qualified as a member of the NAEA (Estate Agency) and is currently working towards the ARLA technical award (lettings).

      Ruth loves to walk and has completed the Carlisle to Barrow and Keswick to Barrow Walks, she also enjoys the Cinema, eating out, weekends away and spending time with her family.

    • Claire Robinson

      Claire Robinson - Property Department Manager & Valuer

      Claire currently works as Valuer for the Barrow Branch and is the Property Department Manager, overseeing the day to day running of both Barrow and Dalton branches, helping people get from A to B as smoothly as possible.

      Claire joined Poole Townsend in April 2001 and has attained her MNAEA.

      Claire’s interests include skiing, going to the gym, property development and socialising.

    • Brad Pearce

      Brad Pearce - Valuer

      Brad Joined Poole Townsend in 2010 after working locally in Media Sales. Brad is the Manager and Valuer of our Ulverston Branch but also covers valuations in other areas such as Barrow, Dalton, Askam, Millom and most areas throughout South Lakes. He oversees the day to day running of the Property Department in Ulverston, along with a well-established sales team, to ensure a professional and helpful service throughout the home moving process.
      He covers valuations for all types of residential properties along with land and building plots. Brad has attained qualifications though the NFOPP to level 3 and is a member of the National Association of Estate Agents.

      Brad spends most of his free time with his family especially going on adventures with his young son and family dog. His interests include a variety of sports as both a player and spectator including Rugby League, American Football, Basketball and Squash. He enjoys most things ‘outdoors’, including fell walking in the lakes. He also enjoys live music, films, travel, and socialising.

    • Andrew Sanderson

      Andrew Sanderson - Senior Lettings Coordinator

      Andrew is a Senior Lettings Coordinator based in the Dalton office. Andrew has been involved in Lettings since 1996, having worked throughout Lancashire, South Cumbria & the Furness peninsular. More recently has taken a 2 year break and recently joined Poole Townsend in April 2010. He has an outgoing personality and enjoys working with and helping the general public and local communities.

      Andrew has passed the NAEA Certificate in Residential Lettings and Management examinations and also the ARLA Competency Test Level 1.

      Andrew enjoys playing football for Slyne with Hest in the West Lancashire League, as well as watching football and darts. He also enjoys socialising and relaxes by spending time with the family.

    • Craig Turner

      Craig Turner - Domestic Energy Assessor

      Craig joined Poole Townsend in 2004 as a sales negotiator in the Kendal branch and has subsequently worked as part of the sales team within all of Poole Townsends office across the South Lakes and Furness area including working in Grange in a senior capacity. During this time he gained the level 3 technical award in estate agency and became a member of the National Association of Estate Agents.

      In 2010 Craig achieved his Diploma in Domestic Energy Assessment and has been producing Energy Performance Certificates along with high quality marketing literature including brochures, floorplans and professional photographs. Craig also carries out property market appraisals across the South Lakes area and is now Branch Manager and Valuer for the highly successful Grange over Sands office allowing him to fully utilise his extensive local knowledge and wide ranging experience of contrasting property markets both economic and geographic. Craig believes in proactive and effective marketing of property combined with equally high standards of customer service allowing a smooth and successful property transaction for our valued clients.


      Craig was brought up in the Grange area, having been educated in the local school system, and has been involved in local football for a number of years. Having briefly moved away to university to achieve a BSc Honours degree Craig returned to the area and subsequently started a family with whom he loves spending his spare time. Craig's other interests include fitness, golf and being involved in his wife's equestrian business. As well as this he also enjoys socialising with friends and family.

    • Marie Woodward

      Marie Woodward - Independent Financial Advisor

      Marie joined Poole Townsend 9 years ago. She has worked in Financial Services for over 25 years and has a vast wealth of knowledge and experience. She is fully qualified to DipPFS.

      Her areas of expertise are investments, inheritance tax planning and trusts investments.

      She is a qualified Later Life Adviser and an associate member of the Society of Later Life Advisers. As such she is able to provide assistance and guidance in areas such as Care Home Fee planning, what help is available from the state, protecting your assets and making your money last as long as possible.

      She can also help you with your retirement planning and guide you through the many confusing options available, whatever your circumstances.

      Marie loves to travel, be it in the UK or a more exotic destination. (Some of her clients will remember the incident with the elephant!) She is interested in all things to do with food – cooking, sourcing local produce, food fairs, etc. and enjoys walking in the lovely countryside she has on her doorstep. She loves spending time with her young granddaughter.

    • Vicky Johnson

      Vicky Johnson - Mortgage Advisor

      Vicky advises on many different types of mortgages and income and life protection including:

      • Life & Critical Illness Cover

      Vicky joined Poole Townsend Solicitors, Estate Agents and Financial Services in Barrow in Furness as an office junior through an apprentice scheme in September 2000 and since then has worked her way up the Financial Services ladder going from Mortgage Admin Assistant to Investment Admin Assistant to taking on the role of Mortgage Adviser.

      Vicky’s qualifications include:

      • Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice
      • She will be looking to study for the Advanced Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice (to include specialist Equity Release advice) in the next 12 months.

      Vicky’s interests outside of work include films and music. She also enjoys shopping, shopping and more shopping.

    • Lyn Liness

      Lyn Liness - Mortgage & Equity Release Specialist

      Lyn can advise on all mortgages – ranging from first time buyers to movers and clients just wanting to remortgage and change lenders to get a better deal. Lyn is qualified and experienced in the complex area of Equity releases mortgages for clients over the age of 55. Lyn can also offer advice on general insurances, life cover and critical illness cover and has access to a wide range of providers to ensure the right product is available.

      Lyn joined Poole Townsend in 1998 as mortgage adviser and has over 20 years experience in the mortgage market.

      Lyn’s qualifications include:

      Certificate in mortgage advice and practice – CEMAP,
      Certificate in Regulated Equity Release – CeRER
      Financial planning – Certificates 1 and 2.

      Lyn is Mum to 2 children so outside of work her interests are based around family, friends and generally being a taxi service.

      Caroline Advises on many different types of mortgages and income and life protection including:

      Caroline has worked for over 20 years in the Finanacial Services industry. She worked for Halifax in Lancaster and then Barrow for 10 years. She has also now worked for Poole Townsend for over 17 years.

      Caroline’s qualifications include:

      • Certificate in Regulated Equity Release
      • Cerificate in Financial Services and their Regulation 1
      • Cerificate in Regulated Customer Care
      • She is currently studying for Advanced Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice.

His areas of expertise lie in all matters financial with an emphasis on complex Estate and Inheritance tax planning and investments, “there’s not much I haven’t come across over the 25 years in the industry, and this allows me to provide help and advice in just about any circumstance”.

      Derek took over management of the Financial Services department in 2003, and has been involved in all the strategic planning within the firm for some time, becoming a Partner in 2010, one of the first non-lawyer Partners within a law firm in the UK. He is the firms COFA and jointly runs all the firms marketing activities along with Angela Cornthwaite.

      Derek’s qualifications include:

      Diploma in financial planning

      • NAEA (Technical Award)
      • CeMap
      • Studying towards Chartered Status

      Derek enjoys cooking for friends and family, holidays, reading, walking his dogs, Buster and Oscar and his new found love, spinning!
