A group of local volunteers are trying to bring the excitement and joy of Christmas to some of the most unfortunate in our community. They are doing this by organising the Santa's South Cumbria Wheelie Bin Challenge, sponsored by INS.
The event involves five charity teams each pulling their wheelie bin from Millom in Copeland to Barrow in Furness via Ulverston and Dalton in Furness stopping at ten secondary and Primary Schools along the way, a total combined distance of 22 miles. At each school they will stop and pick up donations of food, toys and funding local collected by the pupils and staff in the week prior to the event.
There is a real buzz around the schools about this event. The event has been designed to encourage the schools pupils and staff discuss the five charities involved, helping educate everyone and raise awareness of the great work being done to help local people in crisis. The schools are building this event into the Personal Development curriculum, asking the pupils for ideas on how they can support the event.
We are proud to be supporting The Cumbria Foundation who exist to tackle poverty and disadvantage and strengthen Cumbria's communities by connecting fund holders and people who donate money with inspirational, life changing projects.
Cumbria enjoys one the highest levels of volunteering in the UK. We have over 6,000 active charities and community organisations. These organisations contribute positively to all aspects of community life.
Within our communities we have genuine poverty and disadvantage. We have one of the fastest growing populations of older people in the country, fuel poverty, issues of housing affordability, low incomes for many people, rural isolation and poor access to services, under-performing schools and pockets of significant deprivation in our towns and city.
Cumbria Community Foundation helps to improve all aspects of our community through the grants we make and that is why we are proud to be involved in The South Cumbria Wheelie Bin Challenge, a true community event.
